Aluminum and Steel Core Conductors

Aluminum and steel cored conductors are two different types of materials used in electrical energy transmission.

Aluminum cored conductors are generally used in high voltage lines. Aluminum is preferred because of its low density and high strength. It is also cheaper compared to copper. Aluminum cored conductors are lighter than copper conductors and can provide the same strength. However, aluminum has lower mechanical strength due to its low density and is more prone to oxidation and corrosion in high humidity environments.

Steel cored conductors are used in low voltage lines and especially in power transmission. Steel cored conductors usually have copper or aluminum cored conductors placed in a steel wire body. Steel cored conductors are preferred because of their high strength. In addition, they are more durable at high temperature and have higher mechanical strength. However, steel cored conductors are heavier and more expensive than copper and aluminum cored conductors.

Aluminum and steel cored conductors have different advantages and are preferred for different application areas. While aluminum cored conductors are generally used in high voltage lines, steel cored conductors are more suitable for low voltage lines. Correct selection of selected conductors can increase efficiency and reliability in energy transmission.
